Individual Project - Popular Mechanics

  • Game Mechanics are the functions that a game is remembered for, which means they either have to be unique or enjoyable to use.

    • It’s important to have mechanics that enhance and progress the game, rather than just having a handful of mechanics just for fun.

  • Many older games are single-player, meaning the mechanics are mainly used to progress the games.

  • Newer games, however, introduce a social aspect, which may require more mechanics, which would be meaningless if the game was single-player.

    • For example, Sky: Children of the Light has many actions that only serve to communicate with other players, which would be useless unless the game had programmed AI instead.

  • There has been a shift in what’s popular to the younger generation.

    • Mobile gaming has become one of the main forms of gaming, as mobile phones are commonplace and accessible.

    • Among Us, a mobile game with a social aspect, became popular over quarantine.

      • This may be due to the social interaction that people could have through the game, which was something many needed during quarantine.
