Because of the broad scope of this project, I felt that it was a good idea to outline the main points of it to keep track of what needs to be done. Here's the list I made myself:
Plan –
· Primary and secondary research:
o Secondary:
- Looking into game development, and draw from historic sources as well to analyse how this process has changed with the new technology of this era.
- Media is far more accessible, and is available to nearly everyone. This has affected the types of games being created, as more people are turning to casual gaming as a fun pastime. This will lead into some primary research.
- I must also look into games pending release or in production to see if any of the ideas or themes are similar to my idea, which may create problems with marketing or gaining revenue for the title.
- To do this, I should also look into past games with similar ideas, and see how successful they were and why, and see if there’s a way to make my game either stand out from the crowd or create a new niche.
o Primary:
- Since a few of the people on my current course were with me in NextGen, they did synoptic projects. Archie was a part of the other game project, so interviewing him about his experience in the group and comparing it to my experiences is a good place to start.
- I may also ask the others on the HND course about what kinds of games they play, what consoles they most frequently use, and their favourite games of the past year. This could also be extended to the rest of the courses within the same bubble as us.
· Project planning:
o Schedule:
- Using the research into game development and my and Archie’s experiences being in production groups, I can create an appropriate timeframe, using the information from other similarly scaled projects to decide how things should be done.
- This may also require a small GDD, which will explain what the game is and what the main functions and mechanics are, which will in turn give the information about any specialist roles needed for development.
- I can also showcase some original concept art and story planning/structure chart of the game, which is something integral to deciding how much time the game should be in development for.
The first task is for me to go over all my current research into historical games and build on it by researching into how the development of older games is different from modern day development and why.
