Advanced Game Development - Brief Initial Thoughts

To start off the second year of the HND course, new units are being introduced for us to complete. The first of these being the Advanced Game Development brief, titled: "Going Indie".

The brief entails the collaberative creation of a simple game aimed towards mobile/casual gamers. This is something I've done in the previous year, although there are differences this time. Firstly, this will be a group project instead of being individual. We also will not be using Unity, and instead will be learning how to use Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine is used by many companies within the Games Industry, as well as used for real-time rendering more frequently by animation and VFX studios, so learning to use this software will be good.

Since the scenario is that we're a team of Indie Developers, we'll have various other tasks to do during this project. Some of these things I've done before, such as create a Game Design Document, and a prototype of a game. However, since this will be a group project, there will be more factors in how these are completed as opposed to the previous times.

I am most looking forward to brainstorming ideas, as well as creating the Game Design Document. Communication may be the hardest part of this project, but this project will be a learning experience. I already have experience interacting with a group, and hopefully I can take what I learnt from the first time (that everyone communicates in different ways, ie. through documents, group discussion, etc.) will help our group in this project as well.

So far, I haven't had the chance to properly brainstorm any ideas. This will be the first order of business for this project. However, I am also eager to include how the marketting of our game would be handled, which is part of the brief, early on, so this may be something that is included in my thought process about what kinds of games we could create.
